MOS DEF @THE 10TH CAPE TOWN JAZZ FESTIVAL

MOS DEF IN CAPE TOWN

MOS DEF IN CAPE TOWN

First of all Mos was 45 minutes late and you could feel how irritated pips where when they started booing the announcer. But Mos came through with The Robert Glasper Experiment and did his thang…the Mos Def way. I could describe the whole feel of the show but ma mans KSoul took the words out of my mouth:

“Mos Def killed the Cape Town Jazz Fest”

i sux at reviewing a first encounter with a longtime favourite like mos. I am bias and more so after his headliner on the Baseline stage of the fest.

thank goodness for that unexplained heatwave man!…by late afternoon we were all drenched in heat, smuggled liquor and chocolate-laced space cookies…yes, “freaks flock together”. you could smell the anticipation of the crowd. we could have all camped-out by that stage the whole day but we chose to be civil and entertain other perfomances. So while i waited for the mos beautiful boogie man : i entertained Diane Reeves; who sang the angel out of herself i didnt even mind the improv song on her meeting Mandela (i normally cringe here), Napalma ( a crazy mozambiquen drum-hop trio) and Zaki Ibrhahim.

Booked for 22:15 i knew the Brooklyn native would make us pay for it, wait for it jus so he could make up for it…i swear i wasnt part of the impatient folks that started booing 40min later. i knew it takes time to setup a tight band, and The Robert Glasper Experiment had made a buzz from their previous nights perfomance, so i ate another choc-joint and waited In came…

“A Love Supreme…Africa!” who could contain themselves here? he was forgiven. the sound was crisp! the band is spacey…i got all i wanted and most of it was Mos to be on a Jazzy vocal tip without apologising for it, and he didnt, rather politicised it. Waving the Pan African Flag he spat wise ones on cue with the drummer…Fck that drummer man simply amazing. they took their time with each song. Old hits were given new pallets and relevant riffs and kicks like Ms Fat booty and the crowd played along…mmmh was that Radioheads “All I Need” in the midst of this thickness. I know i levitated around here, and it had nothing to do with those cookies. he covered the shit out of it and we sang it back summore… what a pleassure. The sun of the soil.

i wish i could elaborate got work now…Joburg’s turn tonite…

peace
